Icarus Effect is set in the year 2027 and the world is dividing itself into two camps, those who make use of physical augmentations and those who prefer to keep their bodies ‘pure’ and free of mechanics. Many ruthless individuals are looking to block the flow of evolution and make sure that humanity remains under its control…
Secret Service agent Anna Kelso has been suspended for investigating the shooting that claimed her partner’s life. Anna has suspisions that the head of a bio-augmentation firm was the real target, and against orders she turns up a few leads concerning a covert paramilitary force and underground hackers. Meanwhile, Ben Saxon, former SAS officer turned mercenary, joins a shadowy special ops outfit. They say they are a force for good, but Ben quickly learns the truth. And so begins his dangerous quest to uncover a deadly secret that will take him all over the world and to the dark truth.
Deus Ex: Icarus Effect follows two new protagonists within the Deus Ex universe, Anna Kelso and Ben Saxon who try to uncover a conspiracy that stretches the globe. The story is set in 2027, 25 years prior to the original Deus Ex. The story stands out as a great story in its own right and can be enjoyed by someone with no knowledge of the Deus Ex story or universe. Warhammer author James Swallow debuts with, what seems to be, the 1st in a futuristic cybernetic action/adventure series, based on the upcoming game of same name. He is also one of the story writers on Human Revolution, and he obviously has great passion and understanding for the universe and it’s contents.
In conclusion if you love the cyberpunk genre then you will love this book. The places and characters are so well put together and you will find yourself reading just to get to the next chapter to find out what happens. If you’re looking for a fast paced story with a futuristic setting then you can’t go wrong with this book.
